A shipping container looks anonymous. Corten steel, rectangular, uniform. But every container carries a biography — if you know where to look.
The Code on the Side
On each container's exterior, a series of markings tells its story. The most important: the BIC code — four letters followed by seven numbers. The first three letters identify the owner. The fourth is always "U" for freight containers. The six-digit serial number plus a check digit completes the identity.
This code links to a global registry. Customs, port authorities, and shipping lines all reference it. A container's movements — loading, discharge, transshipment, storage — create a digital trail.
What the Marks Reveal
Owner code: Tells you who owns or leases the box. Major lines (MSC, Maersk, CMA CGM) have their own fleets. Leasing companies (Triton, Textainer, Florens) own millions more, leased to lines on short or long terms.
Size and type codes: 20GP, 40HC, 45HC. The numbers are length in feet. GP = General Purpose. HC = High Cube (extra foot of height). Special codes: OT (open top), FR (flat rack), RF (refrigerated), TK (tank).
Weight ratings: Max gross weight, tare weight, payload. Critical for stowage planning and safety.
CSC plate: The Convention for Safe Containers plate certifies the box met structural standards at manufacture and subsequent inspections. Valid for 5 years initially, then 30 months.
The Data Behind the Steel
Modern containers increasingly carry smart devices — GPS trackers, door sensors, temperature monitors, shock detectors. These IoT units transmit location and condition data via satellite or cellular networks.
For shippers: visibility. For insurers: evidence. For authorities: a new layer of intelligence.
But data creates vulnerability. Who owns the data? The shipper? The line? The device manufacturer? What happens when a container's tracker shows it deviated from the planned route — or sat idle for weeks at a transshipment hub?
When Containers Go Silent
Not all containers report. "Dark containers" — those without active tracking — still move through the system. They rely on manual scans at gates and terminals. Gaps of days or weeks are normal.
This is where risk lives. A container that disappears from tracking, reappears at an unexpected port, or shows inconsistent weight declarations across legs — these are the signals analysts watch.
The Human Layer
Technology amplifies but doesn't replace human judgment. A customs officer noticing a seal number that doesn't match the manifest. A dockworker hearing an unusual sound from a supposedly empty container. A manifest clerk spotting a consignee address that matches a sanctioned entity.
The container is a passive object. The system around it — people, processes, data — is what makes it transparent or opaque.
